A New Security Paradigm Emerges on Israel’s Northern Front

by admin477351

A new security paradigm is emerging on Israel’s northern front, replacing the old model of deterrence and containment with a new one based on negotiated settlements and demilitarization. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described this new paradigm on Sunday, explaining how the war with Hezbollah was the catalyst for its creation.

The centerpiece of this new paradigm is the relationship with Syria. The old model of a hermetically sealed, hostile border is being replaced by direct negotiations to create a new security regime. A Syrian official has confirmed that talks are focused on a demilitarized zone and other arrangements, with a goal of a final pact by the end of 2025.

In Lebanon, the new paradigm seeks to replace the destabilizing presence of a non-state militia with the stabilizing authority of the national army. Israel’s continued military pressure on Hezbollah is designed to accelerate this transition, which the Lebanese government has now formally embraced.

“Our victories… have opened a window,” Netanyahu stated, explaining how the failure of the old paradigm in the face of Hezbollah’s aggression has necessitated the creation of a new one. He confirmed that building this new model with Syria is already showing “some progress.”

The features of this new security paradigm are clear: direct engagement with state actors, the creation of buffer zones, and the principle that only sovereign states should possess heavy weaponry. This is the new model Israel is working to implement across its entire northern border.
