Mexico Welcomes Iran’s World Cup Team After US Refusal

by admin477351

In a recent development ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Mexico has agreed to serve as the host for Iran’s national football team after the United States reportedly declined to accommodate the squad during the tournament. This decision was confirmed by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who noted that FIFA had approached Mexico following the US authorities’ refusal to host the Iranian team overnight, despite Iran’s group-stage matches being scheduled to take place in the United States.

Consequently, Iran’s training base has been relocated to Tijuana, Mexico, a city conveniently situated near the US border and close to San Diego, California. FIFA has officially acknowledged this change, listing Tijuana as the new base camp location for the Iranian team. Originally, Iran had planned to establish its World Cup base in Tucson, Arizona. However, recent tensions in the Middle East and concerns related to US sanctions on Iran have reportedly led to complications, prompting the shift in location.

President Sheinbaum expressed that Mexico is prepared to host the Iranian squad and is collaborating with FIFA to finalize the logistical arrangements needed for the team. Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iran Football Federation, mentioned that this move to Tijuana is advantageous as it helps avoid potential issues related to visas. He also noted that Iran Air flights would facilitate the team’s direct travel to Mexico.

The US State Department has stated that Iran remains welcome to participate in the World Cup, although it did not elaborate on the reasons behind the decision not to host the team within the United States during the event. This situation underscores the ongoing geopolitical complexities between the US and Iran, though it has not impacted Iran’s ability to compete in the tournament.

The FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to take place from June 11 to July 19. The reallocation of Iran’s training base to Mexico highlights the cooperative effort among the host nations to ensure all participating teams are accommodated, even amidst international diplomatic challenges.
