The Poet’s Iran and the Regime’s Iran: Culture in the Age of Repression

Iran has one of the world’s oldest and richest literary and artistic traditions. Persian poetry, philosophy, architecture, and music represent contributions to human civilization that span millennia. Iranians are intensely proud of this heritage, and it forms a crucial part of national identity that exists entirely independently of the Islamic Republic’s ideological project.

The tension between Iran’s cultural heritage and the Islamic Republic’s restrictive approach to arts and culture has been a constant feature of the past five decades. The regime has censored literature, banned music, restricted cinema, and prosecuted artists and intellectuals for work deemed incompatible with Islamic values. It has also, paradoxically, supported some cultural production that it considers ideologically aligned.

Iranian artists, writers, and filmmakers have responded with a combination of emigration, underground work, coded expression, and courageous open resistance. The Iranian diaspora has produced a remarkable outpouring of creative work that engages with the experience of revolution, repression, exile, and longing. Inside the country, filmmakers like Jafar Panahi have made extraordinary work under conditions of house arrest and formal prohibition.

The women’s rights movement of 2022 had a powerful cultural dimension: the image of women removing their hijabs in public and cutting their hair as acts of protest carried meaning that transcended political slogans. These acts drew on and added to a tradition of cultural resistance that has been one of the most powerful forces for change in Iranian civil society.

Whether the post-Khamenei era will bring any relaxation of cultural restrictions is uncertain. But the richness of Iranian cultural life, sustained despite everything, suggests that whatever political system eventually emerges, the civilization it governs will endure.
