by admin477351

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada will seek a unique alliance with the European Union (EU) to bolster its economic and security ties, aiming to diversify international partnerships amid ongoing trade tensions with the United States. Speaking at the inaugural Canada Investment Summit in Toronto, Carney emphasized the importance of strengthening Canada’s domestic economy while forging new global partnerships.

Canada and the EU are set to commence talks focused on enhancing their existing trade relationship, moving beyond the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The proposed deeper partnership will cover a range of sectors, including defense, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, energy, technology, and financial services. Notably, Canada is the sole non-European participant in the EU’s defense procurement initiative.

During the summit, nearly C$500 billion in new investment commitments were announced, sourced from pension funds, financial institutions, and other investors. The Canadian government also unveiled a new Productivity Mega Deduction, designed to allow businesses to expedite the recovery of investment costs.

Carney outlined plans to attract private investment by offering long-term concessions for the operation of Canada’s four largest airports, while maintaining federal ownership of the underlying assets. This initiative aims to inject private capital into critical infrastructure while retaining government control.

While Canada is keen on expanding its ties with Europe and other international partners, Carney acknowledged the enduring significance of its relationship with the United States, given their geographic proximity and intertwined economies. As discussions progress, both Canada and the EU are focused on defining the parameters of their enhanced partnership, with an emphasis on bolstering trade, investment, security, and strategic supply chains.
