Trump Suspends New Russia Sanctions and Tariffs, Citing National Interest

by admin477351

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order waiving key sanctions and tariffs against Russia, a move he argues is in the United States’ national interest. The decision, announced on Friday, suspends measures that were set to take effect under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, legislation aimed at increasing economic pressure on Moscow due to its invasion of Ukraine.

The legislation authorized tariffs of up to 100% on imports from countries purchasing Russian oil and natural gas, alongside penalties for nations assisting Russia in evading existing sanctions. Trump’s waiver will remain effective until he or other authorized officials decide further action is required, with the law allowing the president to suspend the measures by notifying Congress of their national interest.

The decision arrives amidst mounting criticism of Trump’s approach to Russia and Ukraine, with his administration facing scrutiny over its warmer ties with Moscow and public disagreements with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Democratic lawmakers have criticized the waiver, arguing it undermines efforts to hold Russia accountable for its actions in Ukraine and anticipated the sanctions would restrict Moscow’s energy revenues and limit its global market access.

Concerns have also been raised by countries like China and India, major buyers of Russian oil, who have expressed reservations about the impact of additional US restrictions on international trade and bilateral relations. The waiver introduces uncertainty regarding the future implementation of the sanctions and tariffs as the US navigates the challenge of balancing pressure on Russia with concerns over energy costs and international economic relations.

The move follows controversy surrounding a separate diesel supply agreement involving Russia, defended by Trump as an effort to increase fuel supplies and ease global energy prices. Critics have questioned whether this agreement could inadvertently provide additional revenue to Moscow.
