Trump Administration Seeks to Repeal Methane Emissions Regulations from Biden Era

by admin477351

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to repeal regulations from the Biden administration intended to reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas industry, a move he argues will decrease costs for energy producers and consumers. Speaking at a rally in Lubbock, Texas, Trump claimed that rescinding these regulations would save $45 billion for consumers and energy producers and facilitate the extraction of an additional 210 million barrels of oil.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under Administrator Lee Zeldin, is in the process of revising rules governing emissions from oil and natural gas operations as outlined in the Clean Air Act. The proposed changes, according to the EPA, could result in the production of approximately 1.41 trillion cubic feet of additional natural gas.

The rollback proposal has sparked concerns among environmental and public health organizations. Critics argue that easing methane controls could lead to increased pollution, degraded air quality, and further exacerbate global warming. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is a significant contributor to climate change, and oil and gas operations have been known to release it through leaks, venting, and flaring. These activities can also emit harmful pollutants such as volatile organic compounds and hazardous substances like benzene and formaldehyde.

The regulations introduced in 2024 mandated nationwide requirements to curb methane emissions from existing oil and gas facilities, including measures to minimize leaks and routine flaring. These rules also established a program to identify and address major emissions events detected through approved monitoring technologies. However, the Trump administration began reconsidering these regulations in March 2025, arguing that some of the requirements could hinder domestic energy production and affect US energy competitiveness.

Supporters of the proposed changes assert that reducing regulatory burdens could promote increased oil and gas production. Conversely, environmental groups warn that weakened emissions standards could lead to the wastage of valuable natural gas while posing heightened health and environmental risks to nearby communities.

This development underscores an ongoing conflict between the expansion of domestic fossil fuel production and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The ultimate impact of the proposed regulatory revisions will depend on the specific rules finalized and how they are implemented.
