Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen have firmly dismissed recent claims by US President Donald Trump that Greenland should fall under American control. This response came in the wake of Trump’s comments at a NATO summit, highlighting that decisions about Greenland’s status rest exclusively with Denmark and Greenland itself.
President Stubb emphasized that the issue of Greenland’s governance is not up for debate, reaffirming Denmark’s right to decide its own territorial matters. Supporting this stance, Foreign Minister Valtonen underscored Finland’s unwavering commitment to Denmark’s territorial integrity, asserting that any attempt to challenge it would be inappropriate.
Valtonen further elaborated on Arctic security, suggesting that it should be pursued through existing defense cooperation frameworks rather than through territorial disputes. She pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already engaged in discussions on defense collaboration, while NATO continues its work to bolster security throughout the Arctic region.
Greenland, which operates as a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has once again become a focal point of discussion among European allies due to Trump’s remarks. This has sparked renewed debates concerning Arctic security, sovereignty, and the stability of the region.
