The United States has resumed sharing critical intelligence with Ukraine regarding Russian missile strikes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday. This development follows discussions with US envoy Steve Witkoff in Norway and is aimed at providing Kyiv with advance warnings of ballistic missile attacks, thereby enhancing civilian safety.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the United States for renewing this cooperation, emphasizing that early warnings are crucial for protecting children and other civilians amid ongoing Russian attacks. He noted that the shared intelligence could play a pivotal role in saving lives as the conflict persists.
This announcement comes at a time when relations between Washington and Kyiv are strained over the future of US military assistance and the broader efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While US President Donald Trump has been urging Zelenskyy to reach a peace agreement, Ukraine maintains that any settlement must safeguard its sovereignty and include its participation in negotiations.
In the context of broader diplomatic efforts, Witkoff is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin after his discussions with Zelenskyy. These talks are part of an initiative to explore potential negotiation pathways, although significant disagreements remain about the terms of a possible settlement.
During the talks, Zelenskyy also brought up concerns regarding the limitations impacting Ukraine’s military communications and the availability of Patriot air defense systems. He suggested that Ukraine might consider halting long-range attacks on Russian oil refineries if the United States could provide additional Patriot missiles to bolster its air defenses.
Additionally, Zelenskyy rejected any proposals for negotiations about Ukraine’s future that would exclude Ukrainian participation, underscoring the necessity for Kyiv to have a voice in any discussions concerning its territory and security.
Meanwhile, Russian military actions continue to impact Ukraine. On Tuesday, at least nine casualties were reported, including three individuals who perished when a Russian drone targeted vehicles on the Kyiv-Odesa highway. The resumption of intelligence sharing is expected to enhance Ukraine’s capacity to prepare for incoming missile threats, although uncertainties persist regarding the extent of future US military support and the prospects for a negotiated resolution to the conflict.
