Nvidia’s OpenAI Investment Hits $30 Billion as Both Companies Navigate Complex Futures

The investment may be cleaner this time, but the context in which it is being made is anything but simple. Nvidia is reportedly putting $30 billion into OpenAI’s equity even as both companies navigate genuinely complex situations: OpenAI faces declining market share and rising competition, while Nvidia is managing a transition from being OpenAI’s primary chip supplier to a portfolio investor in a company that is now buying chips from Nvidia’s rivals.

OpenAI’s funding round will raise approximately $100 billion at a $730 billion valuation. Amazon, SoftBank, and Microsoft are expected alongside Nvidia as participants. The $730 billion figure is remarkable — nearly double Anthropic’s recent valuation and just below SpaceX in the private company rankings.

The story of how Nvidia and OpenAI arrived at this arrangement is one of the year’s most dramatic corporate narratives. A $100 billion deal announced last September, built on chip purchase commitments, attracted immediate criticism for its circular structure. When it was confirmed this month that the deal was never binding and OpenAI had already been pursuing chip alternatives, the arrangement collapsed. OpenAI then publicly announced partnerships with AMD and Broadcom.

The new equity arrangement removes the chip purchase conditions that made the previous deal problematic. Nvidia will hold equity in OpenAI without any supply chain strings attached — a cleaner, more honest expression of financial confidence in the company.

The complexity of each company’s situation is real. OpenAI has declining market share, rising competition from Anthropic, high cash burn, advertising controversy, and investor uncertainty. Nvidia has just seen its primary AI customer diversify away from its products. Against this backdrop, their continued financial relationship — restructured but very much alive — is one of the most interesting stories in technology right now.
